Five international organizations known as the "Quintet" for Sudan continued its consultations with Sudanese political stakeholders in support of an inclusive political process, said a UN spokesman on Monday.

The Quintet consists of the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the League of Arab States, the European Union, and the United Nations.

"Building on the exploratory consultations held in Addis Ababa (of Ethiopia) in June, the Quintet engaged Sudanese civilian political leaders in recent days. They continued discussing proposals and perspectives on how to advance the political process, including through the establishment of confidence-building," said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Pekka Haavisto, the UN secretary-general's personal envoy for Sudan, continues to engage all parties and has urged them to make concrete commitments to de-escalation and to engage in genuine dialogue toward a cessation of hostilities, said Haq.

Haavisto spoke on Sunday with Sudanese Foreign Minister Muhieddine Salem to discuss recent developments in Sudan and preparations for Haavisto's upcoming visit to Khartoum, said the spokesman.

Haavisto also continues to engage with Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), to discuss practical measures to de-escalate the conflict, the spokesman told a daily press briefing.

The RSF has been fighting a civil war with the Sudanese Armed Forces since April 2023.

Haavisto has been able to meet with representatives of both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF to try to bring the two parties to direct talks, said Haq.

Haavisto is traveling to Türkiye this week, where he will meet with Turkish authorities as well as with Sudanese stakeholders in the country there, including youth and women representatives, said Haq.
