Zambians vote on Thursday, August 13, in a closely watched presidential election. Up to 8.7 million registered voters will decide whether President Hakainde Hichilema's economic reforms deserve another term or whether the opposition can turn widespread discontent into a comeback.

Although 14 candidates are on the ballot, analysts say the race has narrowed into a two-horse contest between Hichilema and Brian Mundubile, a 55-year-old former minister and lawyer. 

Here is a look at the leading hopefuls:

Hakainde Hichilema

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, 64, won the presidency in 2021 on his sixth attempt, defeating then-President Edgar Lungu by a wide margin after years as the country's main opposition leader. He won 59.02% of the vote.

His victory came as Zambia was grappling with a severe debt crisis and economic difficulties. His government has since overseen debt restructuring and an improvement in key economic indicators, although many households continue to struggle with the cost of living.

On the campaign trail, he embraced the youth catchphrase "Salt Sana" — or "more salt" — urging voters to "add more flavour" by re-electing him for a second and final five-year term.

Brian Mundubile

Brian Mundubile, 55, a lawyer and former minister, has emerged as Hichilema's main opposition challenger after being selected as the presidential candidate of the Tonse Alliance. The alliance later merged with the PF-Pamodzi Alliance, with constitutional lawyer Makebi Zulu as Mundubile's running mate.

Mundubile served as Northern Province minister and later as government chief whip under Lungu's Patriotic Front administration. His campaign has drawn on the political legacy of the late former president while portraying the opposition alliance as a vehicle for change.

He has focused heavily on the cost of living and persistent poverty, arguing that improvements in economic indicators have not translated into sufficient relief for ordinary Zambians.

Harry Kalaba

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba, 50, is seeking the presidency for a second time as leader of the Citizens First party. Kalaba left Lungu's government in 2019 and later contested the 2021 presidential election, finishing third with 25,231 votes, or 0.52% of the total.

He has returned to the race promising a stronger performance and is campaigning as an alternative opposition voice, although his campaign has been overshadowed by Mundubile's growing profile.
