In an exclusive interview with CGTN, Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya said the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is still spreading faster than the response, with confirmed cases nearing 6,000 and more than 2,700 deaths. 

He cited insecurity, humanitarian needs, community mistrust and gaps in contact tracing as major obstacles to containing the outbreak.

Kaseya said about $800 million has been raised for the Ebola response, but warned that funding requirements could rise to $2 billion or $3 billion if the outbreak continues to expand.

He also called for greater African investment in health systems and local production of vaccines and medicines.

Kaseya urged governments to advance the Treaty for the Establishment of the African Medicines Agency and the African Pooled Procurement Mechanism, saying both are critical to strengthening Africa’s health sovereignty.
