Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan's husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, died in Zanzibar while being treated for a heart condition, the country's Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced Monday. He said burial arrangements were being made in Zanzibar, the family's ancestral home.

Hassan became Tanzania's first gentleman in 2021, when Samia Hassan became president after the death of President John Magufuli. The couple had four children, including a daughter who serves as a lawmaker.

His death prompted condolences from leaders across East Africa.

"President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son," Kenyan President William Ruto said.

Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye also sent his condolences to President Hassan and the Tanzanian people.

Hassan's death comes as President Samia begins her second term after a disputed 2025 election in which she secured more than 97% of the vote.
