In the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, a group of former gang members is helping clean up the city as part of efforts to improve its environment.

The young men have been integrated into the National Service, a paramilitary force involved in sanitation and other public works.

Their work has earned praise from residents, who say the clean-up is helping improve the city’s appearance and raise awareness about keeping public spaces clean.

“The sanitation activities in the city are truly commendable. I’m genuinely proud of them, given the involvement of the National Service in sanitation and environmental protection here in the city-province of Kinshasa,” one resident said.

Kinshasa has long faced challenges with waste management and pollution, with residents and authorities seeking ways to improve sanitation across the capital.

The workers, commonly known as “builders,” hope their efforts will help change the city’s image while encouraging residents to take greater responsibility for their surroundings.

The clean-up campaign is part of an initiative launched by President Felix Tshisekedi. In May, he called on members of the National Service to step up efforts to contribute to the country’s development, including through sanitation and environmental protection.

The initiative is also part of wider efforts to reintegrate young people formerly involved in gangs into productive activities and public service.
