The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, arrived in New York on Saturday ahead of the General Debate of the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81).

Convened under the theme, "Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All," this year's Assembly will provide a platform for the AU to amplify Africa’s voice and push for a more representative, equitable and effective multilateral system.

Youssouf is expected to use the UNGA 81 platform to push various agenda for the continent.

First, the AUC chief will amplify calls for Africa to have a stronger voice in shaping global decisions. He is thus expected to advocate for a more representative, equitable and effective multilateral system, including meaningful African representation in the UN Security Council and international financial institutions.

Youssouf is also expected to assert Africa's stance that the continent is taking greater responsibility for shaping its own future. Here, he will highlight Africa's leadership and ownership around peace and security, continental integration and economic transformation, while advancing institutional reform and greater financial autonomy.

He is also expected to affirm the continent's position that it is an indispensable partner in addressing global challenges. 

During his stay in New York, the AUC Chairperson is also scheduled to hold a series of high-level engagements, including a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General, as well as meetings with various Heads of State and Government and leaders from the business community.

The AU delegation will further use the High-Level Week to convene side-events that advance Africa's strategic priorities and strengthen partnerships towards a more representative, effective, and responsive multilateral system.
