In The Gambia, a waste management project is turning spoiled produce and other organic waste from markets into compost.

At Bakoteh Market, vendors separate food waste at source, with collectors transporting the organic material to a composting site instead of sending it to dumpsites.

The initiative, led by the O-Waste Project, has helped reduce the amount of waste accumulating at markets while providing a potential new source of affordable fertilizer for farmers.

Project officials say the compost will be packaged, branded and sold to farmers as part of efforts to make the initiative financially sustainable.

Kanifing Municipal Council says the project has also reduced the cost of managing market waste through daily collection.
