Sudanese struggle as inflation drives up living costs

Markets in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, are struggling to recover as soaring prices squeeze consumers and leave traders struggling to restock their shelves.

Omer Hamid, a shopkeeper in Omdurman, says many returning residents are shocked by the cost of basic household goods.

He says families arriving with 100,000 or 150,000 Sudanese pounds ($166-249)  can find that essential purchases cost more than 200,000 or 250,000 pounds ($332-415).

The rising cost of living is also putting basic healthcare out of reach for many residents.

Fatooma Mohamed, who recently returned to Khartoum from Port Sudan, says she is five months pregnant but has been unable to afford a medical check-up. A sick family member also needs treatment, but she says she cannot afford medicine, food or medical tests.

Sudan's currency has lost significant value since the conflict began in April 2023. 

Economists say low incomes, weak production and limited employment opportunities are worsening the pressure on households.

Official figures show Sudan's annual inflation rate rose to 51.28% in June, from 44.50% in May. Food and beverages recorded an 8.39% monthly increase, while monthly inflation accelerated to 7.08%

For traders and consumers alike, the rising prices are making everyday life increasingly difficult.
