South African police have launched a manhunt after a shooting at a tavern in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, left 17 people dead and 15 others wounded.

According to the police, the victims, 13 men and four women were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical teams. The injured were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The shooting happened at around 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday in Gauteng province.

The attackers were armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. They allegedly opened fire on customers outside the tavern before entering the premises and continuing to shoot.

No arrests have been made, and police have not yet established a motive for the attack.

The latest incident comes days after South African police launched a manhunt for suspects linked to the killing of 11 people, including a pregnant woman, in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban.

Three others were injured in the shooting, which took place on Tuesday night, September 22.
