Egypt is turning to digital technology to enhance the experience for visitors exploring its ancient heritage. At the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, 3D screens use sound and imagery to bring Egypt's history and artefacts to life.

The Grand Egyptian Museum has taken the experience further, offering visitors AI-powered audio guides that can identify artefacts and provide information in their preferred language. The museum also features 3D and augmented reality displays, as well as a virtual reality room offering visitors an immersive journey through Egypt's thousands of years of history.

But officials say technology will not replace human guides.

Archaeologist Magdy Shaker says AI and virtual reality can provide personalized information, but tour guides remain important for storytelling, answering questions and engaging visitors.

Egypt has also expanded virtual tourism. During the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities launched virtual tours of museums and ancient sites, allowing people to explore Egypt's heritage remotely.
