Nearly 40 people were killed in three separate mass shootings across South Africa in less than a week. The deadliest attack occurred in Johannesburg late Saturday, where 17 people were killed. Hours later, at least 10 people died in a shooting in Cape Town.

Police are investigating the attacks and have not established whether they are linked. Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said authorities could not rule out a turf conflict linked to illegal mining. Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner Sizakhele Dyantyi said investigators were examining all possible leads to identify the perpetrators.

The shootings come despite a recent decline in South Africa’s murder rate. Lizette Lancaster of the Institute for Security Studies said murders have fallen for about 25 consecutive months, but noted that mass shootings on this scale were not previously common. The attacks have renewed concerns about organized crime and violence in some of the country’s poorest communities.
