Government figures show the Ebola outbreak has killed more than 4,000 people, with about 8,300 confirmed cases across seven provinces. More than 2,000 patients have recovered.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, began in May and has become DR Congo’s largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak, according to authorities. It is now the world’s second-largest Ebola outbreak after the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic.

Médecins Sans Frontières has warned that the actual toll could be higher, as insecurity and gaps in surveillance are hampering case detection.

MSF also confirmed that one of its staff members involved in the response has tested positive for the virus and is being medically evacuated to the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, thousands of people have fled a displacement camp in eastern DR Congo after a fire destroyed a key Ebola treatment transit center, raising concerns about efforts to contain the outbreak.

The UN has warned that escalating violence in eastern Congo is further disrupting the response, with people fleeing the Kigonze displacement camp in Ituri province following the fire.

The movement of displaced people could make it harder to trace contacts and contain further transmission.
