The UN Security Council is expected to vote on October 8 on renewing sanctions against Sudan, amid divisions over a US proposal to expand an arms embargo.

Greece, which holds the Council's rotating presidency, has tentatively set the date, according to a Security Council Report.

The sanctions regime, established under Resolution 1591 in 2005, includes an arms embargo covering Darfur, as well as travel bans and asset freezes targeting individuals and entities involved in the conflict.

On September 11, the Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2828, extending the measures until October 9 after members failed to agree on a broader US proposal.

This comes as fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues, including in and around El Obeid in North Kordofan. The UN has warned of worsening humanitarian conditions, including water shortages, disease outbreaks and civilian casualties from drone attacks.

The Security Council is also expected to receive its regular briefing on Sudan this month, as the war continues to drive displacement and humanitarian needs.
