Abiy Ahmed was officially re-elected as Prime Minister of Ethiopia on Monday, securing a new five-year mandate as the newly elected House of Peoples’ Representatives convened in Addis Ababa to open its seventh parliamentary term.

The parliamentary vote followed the constitutionally mandated election of the House’s Speaker and Deputy Speaker, clearing the way for the formal formation of the federal executive branch.

Under Article 56 of the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the political party or coalition holding a parliamentary majority is tasked with forming and leading the executive government.

Prime Minister Abiy’s ruling Prosperity Party secured 438 seats in the 547-seat House of Peoples’ Representatives in the June 1, 2026 general election, providing a clear mandate to form the new administration.

Monday’s proceedings mark the official institutional transition from the 2026 general election to a new executive and legislative cycle.

“This is a historic day as I embark on another term as Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia,” Abiy stated, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to advancing national unity, infrastructure development, and economic transformation over the next five years.
