Two traditional motorized wooden vessels commonly known locally as “whaleboats” (baleinières) collided near Ngombe-Lukolela in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Équateur Province, sending one boat to the riverbed and leaving multiple passengers missing.

While official figures have yet to be confirmed by provincial authorities, preliminary reports and eyewitness accounts paint a grim picture.

One of the motorized craft capsized and sank almost immediately following the impact, throwing dozens of passengers into the pitch-black, fast-moving waters.

The timing of the disaster severely hindered early response efforts. Occurring in the middle of the night, the accident meant rescue operations depended on the quick intervention of residents and nearby river users, who rushed to assist survivors in the dark.

Search and rescue operations remain underway for those unaccounted for, as family members gather along the banks awaiting news of their missing loved ones.

Provincial authorities and maritime transport services in Mbandaka, the provincial capital of Équateur, have not yet released a formal statement on the definitive casualty count or the precise causes of the collision.

An official investigative task force is expected to travel from Mbandaka to Ngombe-Lukolela to inspect the vessel, examine the site, and determine liability.

The accident highlights the challenges of navigational safety on the Congo River, the main transport artery for many communities across several provinces of the DR Congo.

Nighttime collisions, overloaded boats, and disregard for navigation rules are among the factors often cited in river tragedies in this part of the country.
