Nairobi initiative turns plastic waste into chess sets

In Nairobi's Kibera informal settlement, a recycling initiative is combining environmental conservation with education. Kijiji Solutions turns discarded plastic into chess pieces, which it donates to local schools to help children learn the game and improve their concentration.

Richard Haukom, founder of Kijiji Solutions, says the project collects and sorts plastic waste before sending it for processing. The recycled material is returned as pellets and molded into chess pieces using specially designed equipment.

Haukom says the initiative has produced nearly 2,000 chess sets using about 200 kilograms of plastic. Meeting growing demand could help recycle hundreds or even thousands of kilograms more.

One beneficiary is the Center of Hope School in Kibera, where chess is part of the curriculum. The school's founder, Isabel Omondi, said the game encourages pupils to participate in class, focus and enjoy learning.

Eleven-year-old chess player Esther Mutua says regular practice has helped improve her academic performance, particularly in mathematics. She has also competed in tournaments, earning certificates and medals.

The initiative offers a way to reduce plastic waste while expanding access to chess. Its founders hope to reach more schools, benefit more pupils and challenge the perception that chess is a game for the wealthy.
