The Mauritian government has approved a proposal to amend the Police Act to allow curfews to be imposed across the entire country, according to the Highlights of the Cabinet Meeting published on Friday.

Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam said calm had returned to most parts of the country, as a nightly curfew was shortened to run from 10:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. through Sunday.

The government will reassess the situation on Monday.

The curfew was introduced after unrest erupted on Monday amid public frustration over water shortages and the shooting of 27-year-old Elodie Thomas by a police officer on October 9.

The violence involved roadblocks, arson and vandalism targeting police stations, shops and vehicles.
