The United States (US) has extended temporary protected status for Sudanese and Ukrainian nationals, allowing them to remain in the country and work legally while the Department of Homeland Security delays a decision on their immigration status.

A DHS spokesperson said announcements on beneficiaries from both countries would be made "at the appropriate time," adding that their protections would remain in place. The status was due to expire on Monday.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) allows eligible foreign nationals already in the United States to live and work legally when conditions in their home countries, including armed conflict and natural disasters, prevent their safe return.

In September, the administration allowed Salvadorans covered by TPS to retain their protections.

It has previously moved to terminate the status of nationals from Haiti, Venezuela, Somalia, Yemen, Syria and other countries.

There are an estimated 6,800 Sudanese TPS holders in the country. Sudan has been engulfed in conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, triggering mass displacement, widespread hunger and one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises.

About 240,000 Ukrainians who fled the conflict have registered for TPS in the United States, according to the figures cited in the report.

The continued protections offer temporary relief to affected families, but uncertainty remains over their long-term immigration status as the Trump administration weighs its next steps.
