At least 20 people have been killed in an attack on Binnari village in Nigeria's Taraba state, according to survivors, in the latest assault targeting rural communities.

The attackers, riding motorcycles, reportedly opened fire after Friday prayers, forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes.

Residents Isiyaku Musa and Sa'idu Nuhu said at least 20 bodies were found after the gunmen left, while several people remained missing. Police, however, reported recovering 10 bodies by Friday evening.

The attackers allegedly looted shops, stealing money, food and other supplies, as well as motorcycles abandoned by fleeing residents.

Taraba state has experienced growing attacks by armed criminal gangs.

Amnesty International Nigeria criticized the authorities' response, warning that the failure to bring suspected perpetrators to justice was encouraging further violence against rural communities.
