The 32nd Cape Town International Kite Festival brought a spectacular display of colour, creativity and hope to the skies above Cape Town, South Africa.

Kite enthusiasts from across South Africa and around the world gathered to celebrate the joy of kite flying. Under this year’s theme "Colour the Sky", the festival aimed to raise awareness about mental health while spreading messages of hope, compassion and resilience.

Giant animal-shaped kites, geometric designs and imaginative creations danced in the wind, transforming the blue sky into a vibrant canvas of colour. Families gathered to admire the spectacular displays, while children ran across the fields, experiencing the simple joy of flying their own kites.

Held at Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery, Cape Town, this year’s festival brought together experienced kite makers, international enthusiasts and creative artists, all sharing their passion for kite flying.

Sustainability and creativity were also on display, with some participants showcasing innovative kites made from recycled materials, proving that discarded objects can be transformed into beautiful works of flying art.

First launched in 1994, the Cape Town International Kite Festival is recognised as Africa’s oldest kite festival. Over the past three decades, it has grown into a much-loved community celebration, combining family entertainment, international cultural exchange and an important social mission.

Organised by Cape Mental Health, the festival also raises funds to support free mental health services for people and communities in need.

There is a powerful message behind every kite that takes flight: just as kites rise against the wind, people can find strength, courage and resilience when facing life’s challenges.

By bringing people together through the simple joy of kite flying, the festival encourages open conversations about mental health, challenges stigma and reminds everyone that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
