Algerian lawmakers on Sunday approved deploying People's National Army detachments to Niger, according to official statements from both chambers of parliament.

During closed-door sessions, Algeria's Council of the Nation and People's National Assembly, the upper and lower houses of parliament, respectively, validated the presidential notification submitted by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune under Article 91 of the Constitution.

The Council of the Nation passed the measure unanimously with 148 votes. The People's National Assembly approved it by an absolute majority of attending deputies.

The move would mark Algeria's first overseas military deployment since the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

Earlier this month, Algeria and Niger signed a military cooperation protocol aimed at strengthening bilateral military and security ties during a working visit by Nigerien Defense Minister Salifou Mody to Algiers.
