President Xi completes visit to Rwanda, heads to South Africa

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday departed the Rwandan capital, Kigali, for South Africa after completing a two-day visit to the country.

President Xi was seen off by his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame.

The Chinese President arrived in Kigali on Sunday, marking the first time ever that a Chinese Head of State has visited the East African country.

The two presidents met for discussions on Monday, after which a number of agreements were signed.

Kagame thereafter hailed China’s relations with Africa, saying it (the relationship) is more precious than money.

“China relates to #Africa as an equal. We see ourselves as a people on the road to prosperity. China’s actions demonstrate, that you see us in the same way. This is a revolutionary posture in world affairs, and it is more precious than money,” a Tweet from the official Rwandan presidency’s account quotes Kagame.

Rwanda was the second African country President Xi visited, after he had made an official trip to Senegal.

While in South Africa, he will attend the 2018 BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, where he will be joined by other BRICS members’ leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Upon completing his visit of South Africa, President Xi will head to Mauritius before travelling back to Beijing.
