President Xi Jinping visits Kigali Genocide Memorial

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial to pay tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide.

President Xi was accompanied by the Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan and other high profile Rwandan officials, including the Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims. Using video and pictorial presentations, the place tells of the tragedy that hit the East African nation between April and July 1994.

In total, it is estimated that between 500,000 and 1,000,000 Rwandans were killed during the genocide.

President Xi made the visit to the Memorial on his second and last day in Rwanda, after he had met with President Paul Kagame for bilateral talks.

A number of agreements between the two countries were signed, with President Kagame hailing the deals as a sign of what Rwanda and China could achieve together.

Rwanda was the second African country the Chinese President visited in his tour of the continent, after visiting Senegal.

After completing his trip to Kigali, President Xi now heads to South Africa where he will attend the 2018 BRICS Summit in Johannesburg.

Upon completing his visit of South Africa, he will also visit Mauritius as he heads back to Beijing.
